Japan Group Tours: the Real All-In Cost from 8 US Airports (October 2026 departures)
Here is the number the brochures leave out: get yourself to Japan for a guided group tour this October and the return flight adds a median €831 to €1,164 per person depending on your airport — a quarter to a third of the real all-in bill. To pin that down, we computed 303 genuine tour-and-flight totals across eight US airports. Each one is a real, bookable October 2026 departure from the TourRadar catalogue plus the cheapest sensible return flights from that airport on matching dates, priced live on Kiwi.com.
The table holds two surprises. First, the typical cost sits in a narrow band: median all-in totals run from €3,124 out of San Francisco to €3,479 out of Chicago — a spread of just €355, coast to coast. Second, the floor is lower than Japan's reputation suggests. The cheapest single combination we priced was €1,496 all-in from SFO: eight days on Sado Island, flights included. Every figure below was computed, not quoted, and the whole table carries its collection date.

Collected 6 July 2026 · one adult, October 2026 departures, 5–14-day tours. Prices move; treat this as a compass, not a receipt. All figures are per-person EUR totals computed by our search engine (tour price + cheapest sensible return flights); dollar figures are approximate conversions at a static €1 ≈ $1.08 rate.
What the numbers say
The West Coast advantage is real, but smaller than folklore says. San Francisco and Los Angeles tie for the cheapest median flight at €831 return, yet their all-in medians undercut Chicago's by only about €350 — noticeable, not decisive. The genuinely odd result is O'Hare: one of the busiest hubs in the hemisphere posted the dearest median fare of the eight, €1,164, more than Miami (€1,007) or Boston (€1,073). Living next to a mega-hub, it turns out, buys you no favours on an October fare to Tokyo.
The flight's share of the median total runs from 26% in Los Angeles to 33% in Chicago — so roughly a quarter to a third of what you will actually spend on this trip never appears on any tour's price tag. That share is the reason this page exists. The floor prices tell their own story too: the same €616, eight-day conservation-and-temple-stay programme on Sado Island was the cheapest total from seven of the eight airports, landing between €1,496 and €2,068 all-in depending on where you start.
One caveat worth owning: Seattle's row is built from 30 priced combinations rather than the 39 we managed elsewhere — our flight provider had a brief wobble mid-collection. The numbers are real bookable prices, just drawn from a slightly smaller sample.
Every figure above was computed, not quoted — the same live engine that powers our search assembled each total from a real tour departure and real bookable fares. The full recipe, including what's excluded, is on the methodology page.
FAQs
What exactly is in the all-in total?
The per-person price of a specific, bookable October 2026 departure plus the cheapest return flights from that airport that land on or before the tour's first day and leave on or after its last. Not included: visas, insurance, tips, most meals, and single supplements. The methodology page has the full recipe.
Which US airport is cheapest for a Japan tour?
In this collection, San Francisco — the lowest median all-in total (€3,124) and the cheapest single combination (€1,496). Los Angeles ties it for the cheapest median flight at €831 return. Chicago was the dearest on both medians.
Why are the prices in euros?
Euros are our engine's working currency: Kiwi.com is queried in EUR and tour prices are converted once, before any adding-up. The dollar figures are approximate conversions at a fixed rate — the partner sites confirm exact amounts at checkout in their own currency.
Will these prices still be right when I search?
No — fares move hourly, which is why the table carries its collection date (6 July 2026). Treat it as a map of the terrain, not a quote. For today's numbers, run a live search: it prices your own dates and airport on the spot.
